Sharonda & Natural’s Intimate Beach Wedding at Arverne East Nature Preserve
Sharonda and Natural’s spring wedding at Arverne East Nature Preserve was a beautiful blend of sunshine, sincerity, and celebration. With photo and video coverage by Richard J Nieves Photography, their day was captured with care, color, and intention.
Sharonda and Natural were married at Arverne East Nature Preserve in Far Rockaway, NY, surrounded by their closest family and friends. With the sound of waves in the background and sunlight pouring across the sand, their ceremony was heartfelt, joyful, and deeply intentional.
From the emotional moment Natural stood with his father at the altar to the celebratory jump over the broom, every part of the day was filled with meaning. The golden tones of the florals, the laid-back beach attire, and the skyline views created the perfect setting for timeless photos and film.
I had the honor of providing both photography and videography for their wedding through my company, Richard J Nieves Photography, with Kate Kerr as the lead photographer on my team. We captured everything from candid group shots to quiet, intimate moments between the couple—along with a full-length ceremony film and a highlight film that reflects the rhythm and emotion of the day.

A Love-Filled Celebration: J'nae & Nicholas at 501 Union
J’nae and Nicholas’ wedding at 501 Union was a heartfelt celebration filled with raw emotion, deep connections, and an unforgettable dance floor. From J’nae’s touching moments with her bridesmaids to Nicholas’ tearful reaction as she walked down the aisle, every moment was pure magic. With the perfect blend of modern elegance and intimate charm, their Brooklyn wedding was a true testament to love and joy. Dive into their story and experience the energy of their incredible day!
Some weddings just radiate warmth from the very first moment, and J'nae and Nicholas' wedding at 501 Union in Brooklyn was exactly that. It was a day overflowing with love, deep emotion, and the kind of support that makes weddings so much more than just a celebration—it makes them a testament to the strength of a couple’s journey together.
Getting Ready: The Energy of Sisterhood
The morning started with J'nae surrounded by her bridesmaids and her mother, each of them bringing a unique energy to the room. There was laughter, a few happy tears, and an undeniable sense of unity. You could tell these were the people who had been with her through it all, making sure her wedding day was exactly as she envisioned. Every detail, from the final touches on her dress to the embrace from her mother, set the stage for an unforgettable ceremony.
The Ceremony: A Moment of Pure Emotion
While we didn’t get to capture much of Nicholas' prep due to timing, the emotion he poured into the ceremony made up for it tenfold. The second he saw J’nae walking down the aisle, every wall came down. The love, the admiration, and the weight of that moment hit him all at once, and it was powerful. Weddings have a way of bringing out raw, unfiltered emotions, and Nicholas’ tears were a reminder of just how meaningful this day was for both of them.
Under soft lights and surrounded by lush greenery, J'nae and Nicholas exchanged vows, sealing their commitment in a moment that felt as intimate as it was grand. 501 Union provided the perfect blend of modern elegance and warmth, allowing their love story to take center stage.
The Celebration: Love, Laughter & A Packed Dance Floor
Once the formalities were over, the celebration truly began. From heartfelt toasts to high-energy moves on the dance floor, J'nae and Nicholas made sure their night was one to remember. Their first dance was filled with pure joy, and as the night went on, their guests matched that energy, making for a reception full of life and laughter. Every corner of the venue felt like it was pulsing with love, proving just how much these two mean to the people around them.
Gratitude & Looking Forward
Being a part of J'nae and Nicholas’ wedding day was an honor. Every wedding has its own story, and theirs was one of deep love, connection, and the kind of joy that lingers long after the last song plays. I’m beyond grateful to have been there to capture it all.

Why Waiting Until the Ceremony to See Each Other Can Be the Most Emotional Moment of Your Wedding Day
Thinking about skipping a first look and waiting until the ceremony to see each other for the first time? That moment is pure magic. The anticipation, the emotion, and the reaction in front of your loved ones create an unforgettable experience. In this post, I’ll share why waiting until the ceremony can be one of the most powerful choices you make for your wedding day—and how to make it work seamlessly in your timeline.
A groom stands at the altar, his eyes welling with emotion as he catches the first glimpse of his bride. His expression is a mix of anticipation, love, and overwhelming joy. The warm glow of chandeliers in the background adds to the intimate ambiance, while the greenery surrounding him frames the moment beautifully.
When planning a wedding, one of the big decisions couples face is whether to do a first look or wait until the ceremony to see each other for the first time. There’s no right or wrong choice—it’s all about what feels best for you as a couple. But if you're leaning toward waiting until the ceremony, I want to reassure you: that moment is going to be powerful.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve captured both first looks and traditional ceremony reveals, and there’s something uniquely emotional about that walk down the aisle—the kind of moment that just hits differently.
The Power of Seeing Each Other for the First Time at the Ceremony
The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day. It’s when you officially commit to forever, surrounded by your closest friends and family. Seeing each other for the first time in that setting elevates the emotion in a way that’s hard to replicate in a private first look.
The Emotion Feels More Intense
I’ve photographed so many weddings, and I can tell you—the emotions tend to be stronger when couples see each other for the first time at the ceremony. It’s the weight of the moment, the anticipation, the build-up of the entire day leading to this one moment. I’ve seen grooms try to hold it together, only to completely break the second they lock eyes with their bride. I’ve seen brides light up with pure joy as they take those steps toward their partner. It’s a moment of pure, unscripted emotion.Your Loved Ones Share in the Experience
When you wait until the ceremony, your family and friends become part of the moment. They get to witness your reaction in real time, and that makes the energy in the room unmatched. You’ll hear gasps, sniffles, and see smiles through teary eyes. There’s something beautiful about having your entire community witness the start of this new chapter in your lives. It Feels More Like a Cinematic Love Story
There’s a reason so many classic love stories save the big reveal for the most pivotal moment—it’s dramatic, heartfelt, and unforgettable. Seeing each other at the ceremony turns your wedding day into a scene straight out of a movie, with all the raw, unfiltered emotions that make love stories so powerful.
Making the Timeline Work Without a First Look
One concern couples often have about skipping a first look is timing. Without those pre-ceremony portraits, how do you fit in all the must-have shots without feeling rushed?
Here’s how I make it work:
Hire Two Photographers: With two photographers, one can focus on family formals and couple portraits right after the ceremony while the other captures cocktail hour details and candid guest moments. This keeps everything moving smoothly without taking time away from the reception.
Plan a Longer Cocktail Hour: If photography is a priority, a 90-minute cocktail hour (instead of the standard 60 minutes) gives plenty of time for portraits without feeling rushed.
Use the Setting to Your Advantage: If your venue has scenic areas nearby, we can take portraits without needing to go far, maximizing time.
Capturing the Raw Emotion of the Ceremony
For me as a photographer, there’s nothing better than delivering images that bring back the feeling of a moment. Seeing your partner tear up as you walk toward them, the way you instinctively reach for each other’s hands, the quiet “you look amazing” exchanged before the vows—it’s those moments that make the ceremony-first reveal so powerful.
That’s not to say first looks can’t be emotional—they absolutely can be. But there’s something about standing in front of everyone who loves you, taking in the weight of what’s about to happen, that just amplifies the feelings.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been second-guessing your decision to wait until the ceremony to see each other—don’t. That moment is going to be one of the most unforgettable parts of your wedding day.
And if you’re looking for a photographer who understands how to capture those raw, emotional moments, who will make sure your timeline works seamlessly without a first look, let’s talk. I’d love to help you document the most important, emotional, and love-filled moments of your day.

How to Film a Ketubah Signing: Essential Tips for Capturing This Meaningful Tradition
Capture the intimate and emotional moments of a ketubah signing with the right videography techniques. From using a two-camera setup to optimizing audio, here’s how to film this meaningful Jewish wedding tradition seamlessly. Watch a real ketubah signing at Perona Farms and learn how to document these special moments beautifully.
Filming a ketubah signing is one of the most intimate and meaningful parts of a Jewish wedding. This tradition, which takes place before the ceremony, involves the couple, their closest family members, witnesses, and the officiant. Because it typically occurs in a small, separate room away from the main ceremony guests, having the right approach as a videographer is essential. Here’s how I film ketubah signings to create an emotional and beautifully crafted wedding film.
1. Use Two Cameras for Comprehensive Coverage
A ketubah signing is a close-quarters event, meaning space is limited—especially if you're working alongside a photographer. To capture it effectively, I use two cameras:
A stationary camera to ensure a consistent wide shot of the entire signing.
A gimbal-mounted camera for mobility, allowing me to move seamlessly between reactions, details, and b-roll.
This setup ensures I don’t miss any of the emotions while keeping a minimal footprint in the room.
2. Proper Audio Setup is Key
Audio is just as important as video when it comes to the ketubah signing. I recommend:
Lavalier mics on the rabbi and at least one of the couple. Since they’re close together, a single mic on one partner can usually pick up both voices, but micing both ensures the best quality.
A handheld mic to pass around for family members who may want to say something meaningful. This makes post-production easier when incorporating heartfelt moments into the wedding film.
3. Be Mindful of Space and Angles
Because the ketubah signing happens in a small room, positioning is everything. I place my stationary camera in a corner to get a full view of the table while keeping my moving camera at an angle that allows for quick reaction shots. Avoid blocking the photographer’s view—communicating with them before the signing starts ensures you both get the best shots without interfering with each other.
4. Capture the Details
Some of the most beautiful moments in a ketubah signing come from the small details:
The intricate artwork and text of the ketubah itself.
The couple’s hands as they sign the document.
Emotional exchanges between family members.
The rabbi’s expressions as they guide the couple through the tradition.
B-roll of these elements enhances the storytelling aspect of the final film.
5. Anticipate Key Moments
Unlike the ceremony, a ketubah signing doesn’t follow a rigid format, so being prepared for spontaneous moments is crucial. Pay close attention to the rabbi’s pacing and cues—these will signal when an important exchange is about to happen, ensuring you’re ready to capture the moment.
6. Edit Thoughtfully to Weave the Story Together
In post-production, I blend footage from both cameras to create a seamless flow between wide-angle coverage and close-up reactions. I incorporate soft, natural transitions that match the solemn yet celebratory mood of the signing.

Tips for Planning a Central Park Wedding Ceremony and Photoshoot
Planning a wedding in Central Park is a dream for many couples, with its iconic scenery and natural beauty providing the perfect backdrop for your big day. From securing the ideal location to timing your ceremony for the best lighting, this guide covers everything you need to know to make your Central Park wedding ceremony and photoshoot seamless and unforgettable.
Central Park’s timeless beauty makes it a dream destination for many couples planning their wedding. With iconic locations like Bethesda Fountain and the Bow Bridge, it’s easy to see why this park remains one of the most sought-after spots for ceremonies and photoshoots. If you’re considering saying your “I do’s” in the heart of New York City, here are three essential tips to help you plan the perfect Central Park wedding and photoshoot.
1. Plan Ahead for Permits and Timing
One of the most critical steps in planning a Central Park wedding is securing the necessary permits. For weddings with fewer than 20 guests, permits are generally optional but recommended to reserve your chosen location. Larger gatherings will require a permit, which can be obtained through the NYC Parks Department. Popular spots like Bethesda Terrace and the Conservatory Garden can book up quickly, so plan to apply at least a few months in advance.
Timing is everything when it comes to capturing the beauty of Central Park. Mornings and weekdays are ideal for avoiding crowds, giving you a more serene backdrop for your ceremony and photos. The golden light just after sunrise or late afternoon offers stunning opportunities for natural, glowing portraits.
For more insights on planning around timing and permits, check out my blog post on 3 Planning Tips for a Fall Wedding.
2. Choose the Perfect Spot for Your Ceremony
Central Park boasts numerous picturesque locations, each offering its own unique charm. Whether you’re drawn to the romantic feel of the Bow Bridge, the grandeur of Bethesda Terrace, or the quiet intimacy of Shakespeare Garden, there’s a spot that’s perfect for your vision.
Consider the logistics of your location. Some areas, like the Bethesda Fountain, have ample space for larger gatherings, while others, such as Wagner Cove, are better suited for intimate ceremonies. Think about accessibility for guests, nearby amenities, and how the setting aligns with your desired aesthetic.
For couples seeking inspiration on incorporating iconic venues into their wedding day, I recently explored similar themes in this blog post.
3. Work with Vendors Familiar with the Park
Choosing vendors who are experienced with Central Park weddings can make a world of difference. Photographers and planners who know the park well can guide you to hidden gems and help navigate challenges like changing light conditions or unpredictable weather.
When it comes to photography, working with someone who understands the park’s layout ensures that no iconic moment is missed. As a photographer who’s captured countless weddings in Central Park, I always scout locations in advance and tailor my approach to each couple’s vision. Collaborating with an experienced team allows you to focus on enjoying your day while we handle the logistics.
For more on how to choose the right vendors for your Central Park wedding, take a look at this guide.
Planning a Central Park wedding can be an unforgettable experience, blending urban charm with natural beauty. By securing the right permits, choosing a stunning location, and working with experienced vendors, you’re setting yourself up for a truly magical day.

Hello and salutations, couples! 💕 Today, I am beyond excited to share the heartfelt story behind Izzy and Waleed's enchanting wedding day. As the sole proprietor of Richard J Nieves Photography, it's moments like these that remind me why I fell in love with capturing love stories through the lens.
Izzy and Waleed's journey began in the most unexpected yet serendipitous way—at a class meet and greet for medical school in August 2020. They quickly became friends, part of a larger friend group, and after a year, their friendship blossomed into a beautiful romance. Fast forward 2.5 years, and here they are, ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives together.
Individually, Izzy finds joy in reading, running, yoga, crosswords, cooking, and volleyball, while Waleed's passions include growing plants, watches, coffee, 3D printing, and cooking. Together, they bond over their shared love for cooking intricate recipes, exploring new restaurants and breweries, and embarking on adventures around the globe.
Their first date was a reflection of their genuine connection—cooking pad thai together, listening to music, and finally expressing their feelings for each other after being friends for so long. And their first vacation to Montreal in December holds a special place in their hearts, surrounded by snow and warmth from the kind-hearted people they met along the way.
Describing each other's personalities, Waleed is self-assured, relaxed, smart, ambitious, curious, and extremely loving, while Izzy is kind, confident, funny, smart, and warm-hearted. Together, they create an environment that's laid-back, relaxed, and full of laughter and fun.
Their love is beautifully encapsulated in the song "Heat Waves" by Glass Animals, which will be incorporated into their reception, adding another layer of sentiment to their special day.
One of the rituals that strengthen their bond is cooking dinner together every night, a meaningful time where they share experiences and decompress from the day, embodying the partnership they cherish most in their relationship.
At Richard J Nieves Photography, my passion lies in documenting these precious moments and preserving them for eternity. If you're currently planning your own special day and resonate with Izzy and Waleed's love story, I would be honored to be a part of your journey.
