As a wedding photographer, one of my favorite parts of the process is getting to know my couples long before they walk down the aisle. Mario and Emily are the kind of couple that immediately make you feel like an old friend, warm, genuinely fun, and constantly making each other laugh. I honestly loved spending every minute with them, and after seeing their chemistry in front of the camera, I am counting down the days until their wedding day!

Valley Forge is famous for its rolling hills, grand monuments, and lush, tall fields, but what really made this session unique was Mario and Emily’s playful energy.
One of my absolute favorite moments from the shoot happened completely organically out in the fields. Mario happens to be one of those guys who has an incredible vault of knowledge on the most fascinating, random topics. Mid-walk through the tall grass, he stopped, picked up a small wildflower, and casually spouted off the most interesting details about the local flora.
Emily smiled, we all shared a laugh, and I snapped a shot of them holding that exact flower together. It’s those spontaneous, unscripted moments, where a couple’s real personality shines through, that make an engagement session so magical.

1. Work the Open Shade & Architectural Cover
Shooting in the mid-afternoon around 2:30 PM means working with direct sun, but Valley Forge offers plenty of versatile spots to keep the light soft and flattering. We took advantage of open shade along tree-lined footpaths and used the grand stone architecture of the National Memorial Arch for clean, evenly lit portraits without harsh midday shadows.

2. Embrace Texture and Variety
Don't limit yourself to just one backdrop! Valley Forge offers incredible variety within short walking distance. We utilized rustic wooden footbridges, open tall-grass fields, winding paved trails, and historic stone arches. Mixing natural foliage with timeless stone architecture gives your final gallery incredible depth.

3. Wear Comfortable Footwear for Walking
The park spans over 3,500 acres, and to get those quiet, intimate field shots away from crowded parking areas, you’ll be doing a bit of walking. I always recommend wearing comfortable shoes (or bringing a backup pair of sneakers) to easily trek between locations before slipping into your formal heels or dress shoes for the photos.
