This flat lay was placed on the bottom of bride’s dress. It goes without saying, but always make sure what you put on there is spotless.

Beyond the Mat: Embracing Authenticity in Wedding Photography

Richard Nieves January 16, 2024

Creating Flay lays during a wedding is one of the small moments us as photographers and videographers get to flex our creative muscles. With my flat lays, I avoid using flat lay mats and lean on the unique environment around me.

My philosophy is all about creating images that are dramatic, elegant, and uniquely tailored to each couple, especially for those who are camera-shy. This blog will delve into the reasons behind why this choice ties into my ethos and how it enhances the storytelling of your big day.

The Cumbersome Nature of Flat Lay Mats

Flat lay mats, while popular, can be quite cumbersome to handle, especially in the fluid and dynamic environment of a wedding. As a photographer who values elegance and ease, I find that avoiding these mats allows for more spontaneity and flexibility. This choice not only simplifies the process but also keeps the focus on the couple and their story, rather than on the logistics of photography equipment.

Utilizing Elements of the Day

Every wedding is unique, and I believe in using the elements of your special day to tell your story. Instead of a generic flat lay mat, I prefer using meaningful items and settings from your wedding venue. This approach not only adds a personal touch to your photos but also helps in weaving the essence of your wedding day into each image.

Time Efficiency

Weddings are about moments, and every second counts. By not using a flat lay mat and its accessories, I save precious time that can be better spent capturing candid moments and the natural flow of your day. This efficiency ensures that I'm always ready to catch those fleeting, once-in-a-lifetime expressions and events.

Cost-Effectiveness

As a sole proprietor, I am conscious of the costs involved in photography. Not investing in various colored flat lay mats for different wedding themes not only saves money on my end but also keeps my services more affordable for you. This cost-effectiveness translates into better value for my clients without compromising on the quality of my work.

My Alternative Approach

Instead of flat lay mats, I embrace the environment around me. Whether it's a beautifully crafted desk, a set of charming steps in the bridal suite, or any other element that catches my eye, I use these natural backdrops to create unique and meaningful compositions. This approach not only adds a layer of authenticity to your photos but also tells a richer story of your wedding day.

At Richard J Nieves Photography, it's all about capturing your love story in its truest form. By forgoing the flat lay mat, I embrace a style that is not just about photographs, but about memories that resonate with warmth, nostalgia, and connection. If my approach speaks to you and you're interested in having your wedding story told in this unique manner, I warmly invite you to fill out the inquiry form below. Let's start the journey of capturing your beautiful, one-of-a-kind love story.

Remember, your wedding photos are not just pictures; they're the timeless story of your love, and I would be honored to tell it.
